Now bear with me here as this is one of my very first blog posts here on my new website so Im just starting to get the hang of setting up and running this place. It feels really cool to have a little corner of the internet with my name on it where I can share all the awesome stuff with you guys.

This hat has always been a very popular order that I receive each year around this time so I thought it was perfect to share with you all. In fact last year I sold almost 30 of these hats with one customer ordering 6 for the entire family!! Find the free pattern below and the ad free paid pattern on my Etsy page.

Brim

We will start by creating the brim of the hat using colour A and then switching to colour B for the rest.

Start with Colour A

  1. CH 11 Turn
  2. In 3rd loop from hook DC and again 8x, CH 2 Turn(9)
  3. 22 Rows of 9 DC, CH Turn(9)
  4. Fold the Brim so that the starting end is in-front of your working end. Place 9 SLST through both sides connecting them. (Make sure the brim is not twisted)
  5. CH 1 and place a SC into the DC below your hook.( This would be the first DC of the first row)
  6. 43 SC around the rest of the brim making 44 SC in total. Try to place 2 SC into each row of the brim (44)

Now we will be creating the main part of the hat using the SC we placed around the edge of the brim.

Start using Colour B

  1. 44 DC (44)
  2. 44 DC (44)
  3. 44 DC (44)
  4. ( 20 DC,DEC ) x2 (42)
  5. ( 19 DC,DEC ) x2 (40)
  6. ( 18 DC,DEC ) x2 (38)
  7. ( 17 DC,DEC ) x2 (36)
  8. ( 16 DC,DEC ) x2 (34)
  9. ( 15 DC,DEC ) x2 (32)
  10. ( 14 DC,DEC ) x2 (30)
  11. ( 13 DC,DEC ) x2 (28)
  12. ( 12 DC,DEC ) x2 (26)
  13. ( 11 DC,DEC ) x2 (24)
  14. ( 10 DC,DEC ) x2 (22)
  15. ( 9 DC, DEC ) x2 (20)
  16. ( 8 DC, DEC ) x2 (18)
  17. ( 7 DC, DEC ) x2 (16)
  18. ( 6 DC, DEC ) x2 (14)
  19. ( 5 DC, DEC ) x2 (12)
  20. ( 4 DC, DEC ) x2 (10)
  21. ( 3 DC, DEC ) x2 (8)
  22. ( 2 DC, DEC ) x2 (6)
  23. ( 1 DC, DEC ) x2 (4)
  24. F/O and weave tail into the hat.

Pom Pom

Finally lets finish with the Pom Pom!

  • I like to use the same blanket yarn for the Pom Pom tomake it nice and fluffy and thick.
  • To secure it I use number 4 worsted weight yarn to give ita better hold leaving long ends to fasten to the hat.
  • Fasten the PomPom to the tip of the hat and hide theends inside the hat.

Your Floppy Santa Hat is now complete! I hope you enjoyed this pattern and I can’t wait to see your finished creations! Make sure to tag me on Instagram or Facebook or wherever you post them!
